How much noise does your breathing make while you sleep? Let's talk about snoring.
Aug 23, 2023Fist let's cover what your breathing should sound like while you sleep regardless of your age. Your breathing should be slow and silent through your nose while you not only sleep but while you are sitting at rest.
The thing is audible breathing is one of the first signs of dysfunctional breathing during sleep. When you can hear another human breathing during sleep whether it is a light "purr" or a loud "roaring snore" there is evidence of airflow restriction. When there is airflow restriction there is the potential for sleep quality disturbance. Meaning your sleep could end up making you tired when you awake in the morning instead of rested and restored.
Most people believe there to be only one type of snoring but it turns out there are actually two. One type of snoring is Mouth Snoring. This snoring occurs when ones mouth is open during sleep allowing air to vibrate and collapse the tissues around the upper airway. Not to mention when the mouth is open during sleep the tongue tends to fall back taking the lower jaw with it and making it much harder to breathe. The other type of snoring is through the nose and this type my friend is much harder to resolve. Nasal snoring is multifactorial meaning not only could it be caused by and anatomical reason like a deviated septum, allergic rhinitis, nasal valve collapse but the simple act of over breathing could be contributing to the nose snore.
Many report mouth snoring to stop completely with a simple application of medical grade tape over the lips during sleep to prevent the lips from opening during sleep.
